It was dark as Ben fixed his bed, meticulously folding and creasing the silky fabric until he became satisfied with its appearance. The full moon hung in the sky, shining its silver-blue light in through the antique windows in the otherwise pitch black bedroom. It was a sight that he never got sick of seeing, despite how often it happened. Something about it was just so calming, so soothing.

He would head out tonight. Perhaps tonight, he’d meet her. Ben wasn’t entirely sure of who she was, but at 223 years of age, he figured it was more than time to settle down, provided he could find the right woman to spend eternity with. He had tried quite a few. Marsha had turned out to be a werewolf, Susan was OCD to near insane levels. Julia had a problem with cats, and Fiona absolutely refused to invite him in. Tracy, Stacy, three Lisas. Every one, a dud.

Ben stepped in front of the mirror just as the bedroom light switched on, causing him to wince in the bright artificial light. He grabbed his brush from the dresser top and began to brush his hair, watching his best friend, Sebastian, through the mirror. “How long have you been standing there?” He asked, and Sebastian shrugged. “You coming out with me tonight?”

“Yeah, I can do that,” Sebastian replied with a smile and took a seat on the edge of the bed. He had tied his long black hair up in to a ponytail. Wisps of fringe framed his delicate face, betraying his gender. There was nothing to say for his choice in attire. His long, skinny legs looked to be poured in to his jeans. Almost nothing about the young man that wasn’t feminine. He fiddled with his cravat momentarily, “You’re not going to ditch me again, are you?”

Ben winced and averted his gaze. “...I won’t ditch you, no. You know how it is, Bastian.”

“Yeah,” Sebastian sighed. He knew all too well. Ben would meet a girl, flirt, the three of them would conversate, and suddenly Ben and his lady friend would be gone and Sebastian would be alone. Again. “Welp!” He chirped suddenly, breaking the awkward silence, and slid off the bed, “I’ll leave you to your thing. I’ll be ready when you are.”

“He-, -ey, can yo- h--r me?" A voice called out in to the smoky night, fading in and out.

Ben struggled to make out the words. His heart beat ferociously in his chest as he opened his eyes- but they wouldn't focus for longer than a split second. Hey, he meant to say, but all he could manage was a quiet utterance of “Hhh." He tried again, this time a little louder, and the blurry figure of a younger woman crouched beside him.

“Hey," the stranger spoke. “I'm Sebastian."

That seemed off, but Ben could not pinpoint why. “M-Mikhael?"

Sebastian pouted softly, pushing Ben's hair from his face. “Shhh. Now that I know you're fine, please don't try to talk. Relax. The next while will be painful and you will need your strength."

“Wh... what?" Ben asked, thoroughly confused by Sebastian's statement, but as he opened his mouth to speak again, he felt a sharp, pulsing pain that burned like liquid fire in his veins. Oh my god- He went to scream, but there was silence and he instead grabbed hold of Sebastian’s arm, clinging for dear life. With every slow beat of his heart, the pain increased, spreading like a raging wildfire on the tundra. A blackness began to envelop him, obscuring his already blurry vision as his surroundings faded to black. I’m-

He opened his eyes to a world clearer than any he had seen before. It was definitely Earth and definitely America- It was the exact place he last remembered being. Ben turned his head to the left, and sitting a foot or so away was Sebastian. Her long, black hair curled gently at the ends, and her face appeared to be the very definition of classic beauty. Ben wasn’t sure if he was happier to be alive than he was happier to wake up to someone so beautiful.

Sebastian smiled and moved closer to Ben, looking him over for any significant damage. “I thought you’d make it,” Sebastian smiled., “How are you feeling?”

Ben had vague memories of pain, and it was perhaps the thought of it that caused the left side of his neck to ache. Suddenly, a barrage of jolted memories began to hit all at once- Mikhael attacking him and biting his neck, him falling to the floor, and flashes of a face he’d never seen before. “What happened? I feel-” He felt tingly. “Why do I feel like this? Where is Mikhael?”

“Woah, slow down, I- Mikhael....” Sebastian sighed. Ben would need someone, and that someone should have been Mikhael, were he not using Ben for his own personal gains. He very nearly incited a vampire war. “...I’ll explain everything to you, Ben, and I want you to know that I will help you through this.”

“Alright,” Ben replied with a coy smile, “I love help that-” His gaze stopped on Sebastian’s chest, which was clothed in a torn, half-open shirt. Suddenly, Sebastian’s name made a lot more sense and Ben’s skin flushed red with embarrassment. Oh my god, she’s a he. She has a penis. “...Is helpful.”
