Nick's idea to go camping came to him while he was halfway done with the last final of his junior year in college. Struggling to remember a complex math formula, his mind veered away to how he was going to spend his summer. His job back home didn't begin for another week and he wanted to relax and take it easy while he could. He didn't feel like partying for seven days straight with his roommates, but they would probably demand he spend the week in a drunken haze.
Thinking about his roommates made him remember how he had tripped over Tucker's camping equipment on his way out of the door, in a hurry to get to his last class. An outdoor sports enthusiast, Tucker always left his stuff around for other people to deal with and fall over. Tucker and Nick had gone camping a few times together before, so Nick knew the basics, and camping alone sounded like a nice way to have some time to himself after a tough semester. "What could happen?" he thought.
By the next night he was headed out into the desert, easily toting forty-five pounds of camping gear thanks to the twenty pounds of muscle he'd added onto his formerly slim frame over the past year. The bodybuilding he'd started doing daily with his roommate James had paid off with a lean, buff body. He'd changed his style and had finally gotten one for his dark hair beyond running a towel through the thick strands. His face had always been handsome, but the daily workouts had thinned it out, making his eyes and full lips stand out. Between all that and his easy-going attitude, girls had suddenly been making more plays for Nick. But part of his reasons for getting away from it all and going camping was to do some soul searching, because as much as Nick liked the ladies, he was also realizing that he liked one of his male roommates, Wes.
Wes was his best friend. Quiet and sarcastic with a swimmer's physique and softly spiked blond hair, Wes was his partner in crime. They were close in a way the other two roommates couldn't touch. "Bromance," James called it. Nick didn't know how to explain how accurate that was. Because their bedrooms were side by side in the small house they all shared, Wes was usually in Nick's room until late at night or vice versa, talking and just being together. Nick liked him, a lot, and had realized that the unnamed but not unpleasant tension between the two was more than mere bromance--it was sexual.
Nick had never asked directly but he was mostly convinced that Wes was gay because he never brought girls home or really talked about his sex life, but Nick hadn't brought a girl home in a long time either. Neither were the type to kiss and tell but Nick couldn't figure out if it all meant that they both liked each other and didn't want to ruin a possible future hookup. Wes didn't know Nick was interested in men because Nick had never had steamy thoughts about any man besides Wes. He'd meant it during their freshman year when he'd indirectly mentioned that it was okay with him if Wes was gay, unknowing of the future irony.
